Yahoo! Releases New eCommerce Search
Posted on September 24, 2003
San Francisco: US Internet giant
Yahoo has rolled out a powerful new search engine aimed
at grabbing a bigger piece of the highly-competitive
market by merging its search platform with e-shopping.
The company, based in Sunnyvale in
California's famed Silicon Valley, said the new platform,
that will go head-to-head with the likes of Google,
had integrated its e-commerce shopping functions into
its search engine.
The move will allow punters to search
for comparative products and prices and compare a range
of merchants online before making a purchase, the company
said. "The combination of Yahoo! Product Search
and Yahoo! Shopping creates a powerful online comparison
shopping tool for consumers," said Yahoo Vice President
Rob Solomon.
The system merges algorithmic search
and Web crawling technology and with "product and
merchant information to create an unparalleled product
search and comparison shopping experience for our users,"
said Yahoo's Jeff Weiner.
The newly redesigned search engine
merges Yahoo's existing shopping database of 17,000
merchants and millions of products with its popular
search engine used by millions every day.
The move
is the latest step in a blurring of the lines between
e-commerce and search engines as the industry seeks
to cash on the technological advances that have changed
the world but proved difficult to make money on.
