New Features in Google
January 11, 2004
Google has updated its web
search technology yet again, adding five new features that enable users
to search beyond standard text queries.
Google's website now enables users to search for US
area codes, Universal Product Codes (UPC), flight tracking information,
Vehicle Identification (VIN) numbers and US Postal Service tracking numbers.
A search for a US area code will return a map of that
geographic region at the top of the results page, while a search for a
flight number will provide a direct link to flight status information.
By entering USPS tracking numbers into the Google search
box, users will now see a direct link to the USPS website and information
about the status of their package.
Typing in a UPC code will bring up more information
about that specific product, while searching for a VIN leads to a link
for a page with more information about the year, make and model of a specific
car.
The new features further build on Google's "Search
by Number" capability, announced less than a month ago.
This initially enabled users to search for FedEx and
UPS parcel numbers, patent numbers, equipment identification numbers issued
by Federal Communications Commission, and airplane registration numbers
from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Other new features introduced over the last month,
include a tool for searching text within books, and the integration of
its shopping search service Froogle into its main web search.
Google said that international
versions of today's new features, currently only available on the google.com
website, will be available in the coming months.
