Google reports 65% of searches are informational, 20%
commerical
May 3, 2004
Recently a Google representative claimed
that 65% of all searches were information-seeking, while
20% were consumer queries.
Using data from their toolbar, Google
is able to determine the search query, which link is
clicked and how long the visitor stays on the site chosen.
Looking at the numbers, a 20% figure for consumer queries
seems high, however, with the data that the toolbar
gives, Google will have very accurate information.
However, it seems clear that if you
are doing research on a competitor, you are doing informational
research, but the toolbar will detect that the searches
are commercial in nature.
Web surfer searching habits continue
to evolve and in six months, we expect these numbers
to be very different.
