Guest Article: How To Get A Top Ranking In Google In Just 3 Days
by Mark Flavin
Note: Commentary by Jerry West in Bold.
So
how do you get a top listing in Google and how do you get into Google
quickly?
Let's
begin with the latter. You can submit your site using Google's submit site
tool but amazingly enough this is NOT the fastest way to get listed.
[Jerry West]: Don't ever use Google Add URL.
Here's
the secret to getting listed in Google like lightning: PRESS RELEASES
Yep
issue a press release relating to your website you will see your site in all
the major search engines in 3 or 4 days.
To
issue a press release, go to PRWeb
[Jerry West]: The author states to do a submission for free. Don't fall for this, not unless you want to get spidered fast. Signup for the $80.00 distribution as that will get you in Yahoo! News and a lot of other high profile places that Google lurks. Get in front of the right places. Don't scrimp on your business. If you don't have the budget, get one. It's only $80.00 and worth five times that in what you will get back.
Don't get suckered for the free press release distribution networks. While the statement "promotion can be found that is free" is true, the statement "all good promotion comes with a price tag" is also true. Promote your business the right way, it will pay off in the long run.
[Jerry West]: Agreed.
To
go about writing a press release there are two important things to remember.
1) Think like a journalist;
2) Read previous press releases to get ideas
from them. Do both these tasks and you wont go far wrong.
Ok
now that your sites in are Google how are we going to get a top spot for
keywords related to our site? Well I'm afraid to tell you this is no easy
process as it could possibly take months, even years! But with some luck and the
right tools it is achievable.
[Jerry West]: There is no such thing as luck. Either something happens or it doesn't.
There
are two keys to getting a high ranking 1) Your Keywords &
2) High Page Rank (Sites that already rank high in the search engines)
Websites Linking To Your Website
[Jerry West]: Top ranking sites have nothing to do with PageRank. Simply look at the top listings of competitive keyword phrases and you will often see a PageRank 0 site in the top ten.
Let's
look at keywords first.
So
to go about finding keywords we are going to use some free tools:
WordTracker
Using
these two tools you can search keywords related to your product/website & find out which ones are searched a lot.
[Jerry West]: It is highly adviseable that you never use a free tool to gain research data, especially the Overture Suggestion Tool which is full of Search Spam. The WordTracker tool, paid version, will at least give you a solid understanding of the search patterns by users.
When
you gather 50 or 60 keywords go into Google and type in the search phrases
you have found. If there are over 6 million results for your phrase my
opinion would be move on, there is too much competition for the phrase and
it would take either years of work or getting very lucky and having some
very powerful sites link to yours.
[Jerry West]: What the author here fails to mention is how to do the searches. If you just type in keywords in the search box, you aren't getting the true competition for that keyword phrase. You need to type in the keyword phrase in quotes to get the true competition.
For example, if you type the keyword phrase: "diamond engagement rings" into Google, you get over 9 million web pages. The problem is, a document with the sentence:
"In a prime contest between the A's and the Twins on the diamond the two teams were set for their engagement to see which team would stay in the hunt for World Championship rings."
You see, by typing without quotes, Google will return this document. Why? Because it contains diamond, engagement and rings, but not necessarily together. By placing quotes, the result is 1.9 million pages, well within the guidelines by the author. And by doing this, we restrict "the competition" to pages that actually are about the product being marketed.
It is highly advised that you use the tools at your disposal correctly, or you just may walk right past a great opportunity.
Focus
on phrases with less then 2 million results in Google. These are the keywords
you need to focus on. Just check WordTracker and Overture and make sure they
are getting some traffic every month.
Once
you have decided on your keywords. You need to make sure these keywords
feature all over the body of you website.
Make
sure to put the most searched keywords in your title & headings.
[Jerry West]: Um, don't do this. You want to create compelling Titles and Headlines, not ones that are just keyword stuffed. You see, top ranking isn't enough - you have to then get the click through to your site. This is an aspect that most marketers neglect.
Now
you need to go about getting other websites to link to yours. You need to
find websites related to yours but sites that are not in competition with
and email the webmasters of these sites and ask them for a link.
To
find sites that will give you a link I recommend doing the following.
Find
a competitors website and find the sites that are linking to them. To do
this simply visit Market Leap.
Type
in the website address of your competitor and you will be able to see all
the sites that link to them. These are the webmasters you need to contact.
Simply
write them a personalized email, complement their site and ask them for a
link exchange. If you can offer them something in return - even better!
[Jerry West]: What are you offering in return? I hate the email tactic. Good sites don't even look at those. Pick up the phone and realize that one great link is worth two dozen average ones.
I
hope this article will help you succeed in your search engine in driving
traffic to your website.
[Jerry West]: The Title of this article was how to get a TOP RANKING in Google in three days. While some of the information in this article was good, it does not live up to the hype of the Title. Speaking of hype, you should check out the author's site - full of over-hyped, under achieving products.
