Best
Internet Directories
There are two reasons to actively add your websites to directories: Traffic and Links.
Although most directories will only gain you minimal traffic, there are a few quality directories that can drive a fairly significant ammount of highly targeted traffic to you. However you should never rely on a single directory like the ODP or Yahoo! directory for your traffic and links.
Most surfers don't usually turn to a
directory to find a site - they usually turn to search
engines or personal recommendations.
This is where the benefit of links from quality directories comes in- the more quality links the better your PR value, the better your rankings and search engine positioning. Translation: better traffic.
There are litterally thousands of directories out there that offer free or paid submissions. The question becomes: do you want to spend every waking minute submiting to directories? What about paid listings? Is the directory listing worth paying for?
While there are some good b2b and niche directories
out there, we have found that many directories fall short of offering any value at all. We were also shocked to find how many nofollow links (even paid links) or offer no PR value to your page.
We have worked hard evaluating nearly 500 directories. Over 68 hours of staff time went into updating and verifying the information we have put together on each of these directories. About 200 more hours went into testing the passing of PageRank. We went through each directory individually, and ranked the top 70 or so directories with a grade of A, B, C, D, or F.
Hint: only three scored an A.
