Search Engine Optimization Professionals
Organic Search Engine Optimization is an art. As a professional SEO, you know this, but educating your client in this regard can be challenging.
My name is Jerry West, I'm the director here at Web Marketing Now. I've been an SEO since 1996. Every pitfall you've seen in your career, I have most likely experienced it and overcome it.
If there is one aspect of SEO that has been consistent from Day One are the myths and misunderstandings that plague the search industry. They never seem to die.
"Submit your site to 100,000 search engines for $9.95."
To this day, that is my favorite ad, and probably always will be. It first popped up right around 1997 or so and just won't die. Why? People keep believing it is true and pay SEO firms for mass search engine submissions. Reality hits soon after when they realize the difference between submitting to a search engine and actually getting a click from a search result.
You are probably well aware that most of the information in forums haven't been tested. Even in Webmaster World, untested theories are often posted ... and believed by inexperienced webmasters or SEOs. That isn't to say that there isn't good information at Webmaster World. I feel it is the best forum hands down. You just can't trust everything posted there as fact.
I know that your time is limited. Isn't it crazy that you can have a firm handle on your business, everything is going smooth, and then something happens to jolt everything out of place? It's true. The deeper you understand SEO, the more you realize there is to do. And it never seems to end.
SEO Expert Advice
Let me first give you some advice from an SEO veteran. First, don't chase the search engine algorithms. You are better off doing the basics. Why not chase the search engine algorithms? The time you spend following algorithms can be better spent on actually marketing your website long-term instead of looking for short-term non-significant results. Take it from someone who has been in this business for twelve years and studies the algorithms closely - don't chase the algorithms.
You say that you have a #2 ranking for a certain keyword phrase that alone is bringing your site 550 visitors per day? Great. In the time that you have spent gaining that ranking, I have written 285 pages of unique content, obtained 821 links, submitted a dozen press releases, etc., and collectively I am getting over 1,300 visitors per day.
I will consistently outperform you because I am looking at the big picture, while you are optimizing with blinders on. You see, chances are you are using old, outdated information. See the difference?
Second piece of advice, understand what information you can trust. I have a small army of certified search engine specialists who compile a ton of data from our more than 500 test domains. I then make sense of it all and put out, what Michael Campbell calls, "The Best SEO Advice on the Planet". You can read more on our SEO Revolution page. (Paid SEO Membership)
Third, know your craft. There is a reason why corporations are outsourcing in record numbers. The average worker tends to get lazy and complacent. Don't be one of them. Constantly improve your knowledge of search engines, your experience and your expertise. Become and invaluable resource to your clients and/or advertisers and they will never leave you.
